The Hummingbird

Within our clinic, the hummingbird symbolises the unique strengths and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to the world. Much like the hummingbird’s remarkable flight patterns, autistic people navigate life with deep focus, adaptability, and extraordinary depth.

Renowned for its ability to hover in place and dart in multiple directions, the hummingbird’s wings beat up to 80 times per second. This agility allows it to thrive in environments that demand constant adaptation. However, this comes at a significant cost—the energy required for such rapid movement puts considerable stress on its body.  This reflects the strength autistic individuals show while navigating their often demanding environments, which can often be exhausting and lead to burnout.

The hummingbird is not a "broken" bird—its unique traits and ways of moving are not inferior but simply different. Similarly, autistic individuals are not broken versions of neurotypical people; they are wonderfully unique.  It makes me wonder, why do humans seek to pathologise natural variations in humanity, yet in the wild this is celebrated?  There are different breeds of birds, dogs and cats - each with their own unique characteristics.  This inspires us to value, understand, accept and celebrate neurodivergence rather than seeking to fix it.

Spiritually, the hummingbird represents resilience, joy, and transformation. In many cultures, it symbolizes hope and the ability to find sweetness in life’s moments.  The hummingbird’s radiant plumage underscores the beauty and uniqueness of neurodivergence.

In our neuroaffirming practice, we celebrate our individual qualities and strive to create a compassionate space where individuals can embrace their true selves and let their unique colors shine.
